Names here describe the room, not a marketing title. Each one began as a plan, a material, and a household. If your building is in this family of problems, write to us.
Residential
The open room
A family asked for one room that could hold a Tuesday and a dinner. We cleared a run of small spaces, kept the timber, and gave the garden the long side of the plan. The sofa faces the light, not the television wall that used to organise everything.
Residential
Evening house
The house sits back from the road and forward into the trees. The work was to make the evening room the centre of the plan, and to let the upper floor stay quieter. Timber, a deep eave, and glass only where someone actually sits.
Threshold
Screened front
The street was the problem, not the plan. A perforated screen takes the afternoon glare and the glance of passing cars. Behind it, the entrance is a single timber volume. You arrive in the warm part of the house, not a corridor.
Residential
The long kitchen
An apartment re-planned around the table it already owned. The kitchen is a line, not a theatre. Storage is shut. The island is for work and for breakfast, and it does not pretend to be a bar.
New rooms in an existing house
Tall light
The commission was not a new identity. It was to find where the afternoon actually falls, and to put the room for reading there. The rest of the house was edited until it stopped competing.
Living
The long room
A high room that had been filled with furniture hoping to deserve the height. We took half of it away, kept a long sofa, and let the clerestory do the work the lamps had been doing badly.
